Description

The Marsun MVBG6PI is a single-phase 230 V inverter generator rated at 5.5 kW (6 kW maximum) that runs on petrol or on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). It has an air-cooled 170EFI engine, a copper alternator, AVR voltage regulation, electric start and wheels, and inverter technology gives a very clean sine wave for sensitive electronics. The manufacturer states up to 6.7 h of continuous running on the 12 l petrol tank and a noise level of 68 dB, so it suits backup power for essential household appliances, a garden plot, building sites and camping.

What is a 5.5 kW inverter generator used for: home, building sites and camping

  • Backup power for essential household appliances during an outage
  • Topping up a solar PV system and battery storage
  • Powering electric tools on building sites and during renovation
  • A summer house and garden plot
  • Camping, a campervan and outdoor events

How much fuel does the MVBG6PI use and how long does it run on a full tank?

The manufacturer states that on a full 12 l tank the MVBG6PI runs continuously for up to 6.7 h. It does not say what load that time applies to.

An indicative calculation at full load: 453 g/kWh × 5.5 kW ÷ 1000 = about 2.49 kg of petrol per hour. Divided by a petrol density of 0.74 kg/l, that is about 3.4 l/h, and the 12 l tank would then last roughly 3.6 h. This is an indicative calculation from the manufacturer’s consumption figure at full load. It gives a shorter time than the manufacturer’s 6.7 h, so when the generator runs at full 5.5 kW, base your fuel planning on the calculated figure. The manufacturer does not state how much fuel is used when running on LPG.

Petrol or LPG: how the two fuels work

The MVBG6PI runs on unleaded petrol or on LPG. The gas cylinder is connected to the generator’s LPG connection through a pressure regulator. The petrol must be clean, unleaded, minimum 95 octane, with up to 10% ethanol allowed; do not mix petrol with oil.

The manufacturer’s compatibility list includes Deye, Solis, Solplanet, GoodWe, Victron Energy and Sungrow hybrid inverters: in a hybrid system, when there is too little solar energy and the battery is flat, the running generator powers the building and charges the batteries. The manufacturer does not state a Two-Wire Switch automatic-start connection or an ATS for this model: the generator is started with a button.

How do you connect a backup generator to a house?

A generator is connected to the site’s internal network through a fixed connection. The manufacturer stresses never to plug it straight into the house wall sockets; only a qualified electrician may connect it to the building’s installation, using a certified mains–0–generator changeover switch. ESO (Lithuanian grid operator) states:

“A generator may be connected to the internal electrical network of a whole building only by installing a fixed connection and measures that ensure the voltage produced by the generator is not fed into ESO’s networks… Entrust this work only to qualified specialists.”

Load: how many appliances can you connect to a 5.5 kW generator

The MVBG6PI supplies only single-phase 230 V. Inverter technology (a digital inverter) produces a very clean sine wave, so the generator can safely power sensitive electronics such as laptops, desktop computers and precision instruments.

Before connecting, make sure the total power of all appliances together with starting currents does not exceed the 5.5 kW rated power. Inductive and capacitive loads such as pumps, fridges and compressors draw 2–5 times more current when starting than when running.

The generator should not run at full (100%) load for long periods. The optimum for the engine and alternator is 75–80% of rated power, for the MVBG6PI about 4.1–4.4 kW. In a system with a battery, add the power the generator will use to charge the batteries to the building’s demand and multiply the sum by a 1.25 reserve factor: the MVBG6PI suits a combined building and battery-charging demand of up to about 4.4 kW. Above 25 °C ambient temperature, or at high altitude, the maximum power can fall.

What to know before buying

  • Noise. The manufacturer states a noise level of 68 dB. It does not state a sound-insulating canopy, so choose the location with your neighbours in mind.
  • Weight and moving. 47 kg, 610 × 407 × 555 mm. The wheels and handle let you move the generator to a garden plot, building site or campsite.
  • Automatic changeover. The manufacturer does not state an ATS or an automatic-start connection; the generator is started manually.
  • Starting. Switch on the battery power, set the fuel tap to “Run” and hold the Start/Stop button for 3–5 seconds. After starting, wait about a minute with no load. Before stopping, disconnect the appliances, let the engine idle for about a minute, and close the fuel tap after stopping.
  • Oil and maintenance. The generator is delivered without oil: before the first start add 0.6 l of SAE 10W-30 on a level surface, because running without oil permanently damages the engine. Check the oil level before every start. Change the oil after the first 5 h of running, then every 50–100 h or once a season. Clean and check the air filter and spark plug every 50 h; valve clearances are checked and adjusted by an authorised service.
  • Location. Use outdoors only, leaving at least 1 m of free space on all sides: the exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide. Do not use in rain, snow or very damp conditions. Use only professional cables and extension leads of suitable cross-section.
  • Storage. If it will not be used for a long time, disconnect the battery and check its charge every few weeks.

Frequently asked questions
