How the MVD12 differs from the MVD15

Both generators have the same 25 l tank, the same sound-insulating enclosure, 74 dB noise level, 340 g/kWh fuel consumption, 230 V / 400 V output and 1200 × 675 × 885 mm dimensions; the differences are power, engine and the consumption that follows from them.

Parameter MVD12 MVD15
Rated / maximum power 11 / 12 kW 14 / 15 kW
Recommended continuous load (75–80% of rated power) 8.3–8.8 kW 10.5–11.2 kW

Fuel use and 25 l tank run time at full rated load (calculated) 4.45 l/h, about 5.6 h 5.67 l/h, about 4.4 h
Continuous run time stated by the manufacturer (load not stated) 12 h 8 h
Weight / oil quantity 253 kg / 2.8 l 264 kg / 3.5 l

Choose the MVD12 if your continuous load stays below about 8.3–8.8 kW: it is lighter, takes less oil, and at full load the 25 l tank lasts longer. If you expect to draw 10.5–11.2 kW or more on a regular basis, take the Marsun MVD15 with 14 kW of rated power.

What is an 11 kW diesel generator used for: home, farm and building sites

  • Backup power for a house and a farm
  • Supporting a solar PV system with energy storage
  • Powering a building site
  • Powering a workshop
  • A garden plot, camping and outdoor events

How much fuel does the MVD12 use and how long does it run on a full tank?

The manufacturer states fuel consumption of 340 g/kWh. At the full 11 kW rated load that is 340 × 11 / 1000 = 3.74 kg of diesel per hour, or 3.74 / 0.84 ≈ 4.45 l/h. At that rate the 25 l tank lasts about 5.6 h (25 / 4.45). This is an indicative calculation.

The manufacturer states 12 h of continuous running but does not say at what load that time is reached. Real run time depends on the load: the lower the load, the less fuel is used per hour, so the tank lasts longer.

How do you start the generator automatically from a hybrid inverter or ATS?

The MVD12 has a factory Two-Wire Switch connection (a dry, voltage-free contact). It is a simple two-wire connection through which a hybrid inverter or an ATS cabinet automatically starts and stops the generator without your involvement.

  • With a hybrid or off-grid inverter the generator is connected to the inverter’s generator input, and the inverter decides on its own when the generator is needed. When solar production is too low and the storage is flat, the generator takes over powering the loads and charging the batteries.
  • In a system with an inverter, a separate ATS cabinet is not needed.
  • At a site without a solar PV system, an ATS cabinet monitors the grid and starts the generator when the voltage drops. This model has no built-in ATS; an external ATS module is bought separately.

When the contact of the connection is closed, the start procedure begins, and when it is opened, the engine shuts down safely. The manufacturer states compatibility with Deye, Solis, Solplanet, GoodWe, Victron Energy and Sungrow hybrid inverters. Connecting to the building’s installation and configuring the ATS must be done by a certified electrician.

How do you connect a backup generator to a house?

The generator is connected to the site’s internal network through a fixed connection. It has a connection for an external ATS module, so changeover can be automated; the module is bought separately, and there is no built-in ATS in this model. ESO (Lithuanian grid operator) states:

“A generator may be connected to the internal electrical network of a whole building only by installing a fixed connection and measures that ensure the voltage produced by the generator is not fed into ESO’s networks… Entrust this work only to qualified specialists.”

ESO — Recommendations for installing a backup power source

The same ESO page advises choosing the power according to your supply connection and, when connecting single-phase loads to a three-phase generator, checking the limit of one phase, because the datasheet gives the total power of all three phases.

We handle it for you. We select the equipment for your site, deliver anywhere in Lithuania, install and connect it.

Equal power on each phase: three-phase and single-phase loads from one generator

The manufacturer states that from the single-phase socket of an ordinary three-phase generator only a third of the total power can be used. The MVD12 has equal power on each phase, so the generator’s power can be used both through the three-phase 400 V socket and through the single-phase 230 V socket.

Allow for starting currents: inductive loads such as pumps and compressors draw 2–5 times more current at the moment of starting than when running.

Running at full 100% power for long periods is not recommended. The optimum for the engine and generator is 75–80% of rated power, for the MVD12 about 8.3–8.8 kW (a 25% power reserve). If the system has energy storage, add the power the generator will use to charge the batteries to the building’s demand.

What to know before buying

  • Noise and canopy. The generator comes in a sound-insulating canopy and the manufacturer states 74 dB. It is still a diesel engine, so plan the location, ventilation and fuel storage in advance.
  • Weight and size. The MVD12 weighs 253 kg and measures 1200 × 675 × 885 mm.
  • Oil. The generator is delivered without engine oil. Before the first start add 2.8 l of 15W-40 oil.
  • Fuel. Diesel. This model has no heated fuel unit, no automatic shutdown at 10% fuel and no Modbus monitoring.
  • Protection. No-load protection, overpressure protection, an overcurrent circuit breaker, AVR voltage regulation, and a frequency and voltage indicator.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Marsun MVD12 run on a full tank?
