Description

The Marsun MVB8 is the middle model of the series: 7.5 kW rated power (8 kW maximum) and a recommended continuous load of 5.6–6.0 kW, which is more than the MVB7 (4.9–5.2 kW) but less than the MVB10 (6.8–7.2 kW). It has an air-cooled FC192F engine (459 cm³), a copper alternator, AVR voltage regulation, electric start and a factory Two-Wire Switch connection for automatic starting from a hybrid inverter or an ATS cabinet. On the 25 l tank the manufacturer states up to 5.5 h at 100 % load, the shortest run time in the series, so the MVB8 suits a combined house and battery-charging demand of up to about 6.0 kW, and fuel should be planned around those 5.5 hours.

Choose the MVB8 when the demand is above the MVB7 limit (about 5.2 kW) but no more than about 6.0 kW. If up to 5.2 kW is enough, the lighter MVB7 will do; if the demand reaches about 7.2 kW, you need the MVB10. Note the run times: the manufacturer states 5.5 h for the MVB8, 7 h for the MVB7 and 8 h for the MVB10 (about 5.5 h by calculation).

Backup generator for home, construction and workshop: what is the MVB8 for?

Backup power for a house during a power cut, topping up a solar system with storage when there is not enough sun and the battery is empty, a construction site, a workshop, a garden plot, camping and outdoor events: the MVB8 suits all of these as long as the combined demand (building plus battery charging) stays within about 6.0 kW.

How long does the MVB8 run on a full tank and how much fuel does it use?

The manufacturer states that on a full 25 l tank the MVB8 runs continuously for up to 5.5 hours at 100 % load. This manufacturer figure is the one to rely on.

A rough calculation from fuel consumption: ≤ 374 g/kWh × 7.5 kW ÷ 1000 = about 2.81 kg of petrol per hour. Divided by a petrol density of 0.74 kg/l, that is about 3.8 l/h, and a 25 l tank would then last about 6.6 hours. This is only an estimate from the maximum consumption figure, not a measurement: the manufacturer’s 5.5 hours at 100 % load is shorter, so plan around that.

Generator with ATS: how does the MVB8 start automatically from a hybrid inverter?

The MVB8 has a factory Two-Wire Switch connection. It is a simple two-wire connection with a potential-free (dry) contact: through it a hybrid inverter or an ATS cabinet starts and stops the generator by itself, so you do not have to do anything.

The manufacturer’s compatibility list includes Deye, Solis, Solplanet, GoodWe, Victron Energy and Sungrow hybrid inverters. The inverter starts and stops the MVB8 by itself through the generator input (GEN) and the Two-Wire Switch connection, so no separate ATS cabinet is needed; at a site without solar, an ATS cabinet monitors the grid and starts the generator when the voltage is lost. Connection to the building installation and ATS configuration must be done by a qualified electrician.

How to connect a backup generator to a house or business?

The generator is connected to the site’s internal network through a permanent connection, and switchover can be automated with a hybrid inverter or a separately purchased ATS module. ESO (Lithuanian grid operator) states in its recommendations for a backup source:

“A generator may be connected to the internal electrical network of a whole building only by installing a fixed connection and measures that ensure the voltage produced by the generator is not fed into ESO’s networks… Entrust this work only to qualified specialists.”

ESO — Recommendations for installing a backup power source

In the same place ESO advises choosing the power according to your supply connection and, when connecting single-phase loads to a three-phase generator, taking the single-phase limit into account, because the datasheet gives the total power of all three phases.

We handle it for you. We select the equipment for your site, deliver anywhere in Lithuania, install and connect it. We calculate the power you need from your supply connection and real load, and choose the switchover solution.

Can a three-phase generator power single-phase loads? Full power from the 230 V socket

The MVB8 delivers its full 7.5 kW rated power from both the 400 V power socket and the 230 V single-phase socket (“Equal Power”), while the single-phase socket of an ordinary three-phase generator gives only a third. When planning the load, allow for starting currents: pumps and compressors draw 2–5 times more current when they start, and the sum of the loads switched on together must not exceed 7.5 kW.

A generator should not run at full (100 %) load for long. The recommended load for the engine and alternator is 75–80 % of rated power, which for the MVB8 is about 5.6–6.0 kW. In a system with a battery, add the power the generator will use to charge the batteries to the building’s demand and multiply the sum by a safety factor of 1.25. The manufacturer’s example: with a total demand of 10 kW you need a generator rated 10 kW × 1.25 = 12.5 kW. By this calculation the MVB8 suits a combined building and battery-charging demand of up to about 6.0 kW. At an ambient temperature above 25 °C, or at high altitude, the maximum power may be lower.

What to know before buying

  • Noise. Noise level up to 97 dB; the manufacturer does not mention a sound-proof enclosure. Near homes, plan a spot away from windows or a sound barrier.
  • Automatic switchover. There is no built-in ATS. A hybrid inverter starts the generator through the Two-Wire Switch connection; at a site without an inverter you need a separately purchased ATS module.
  • Fuel and oil. The generator runs on petrol and is supplied without engine oil. Before the first start, fill the sump with 1.1 l of SAE 10W-30 oil: without oil the engine is permanently damaged. After starting, wait 3–5 minutes with no load, and before switching off, disconnect the loads and let the engine idle for 2–3 minutes.
  • Location. Use only outdoors, in an open space: exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide.
  • Weight and size. 75 / 80 kg, 700 × 540 × 575 mm.
  • Control panel. 230 V sockets and a 400 V power socket, a main fuse that cuts the supply on overload or short circuit, and a key switch.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Marsun MVB8 run on a full tank?

According to the manufacturer, up to 5.5 hours at 100 % load, with a 25 l tank. A rough calculation from fuel consumption gives about 6.6 hours, but it is safer to plan around the manufacturer’s 5.5 hours.

How much fuel does the MVB8 generator use?

The manufacturer states no more than 374 g/kWh, which at a 7.5 kW load is about 2.81 kg, or roughly 3.8 l of petrol per hour. This is an estimate.

Is the MVB8 a generator with ATS?

The MVB8 has no built-in ATS: the ATS module is sold separately. With a hybrid inverter no ATS is needed, because the inverter starts the generator through the Two-Wire Switch connection.

Which inverters is the MVB8 compatible with?

The manufacturer’s compatibility list includes Deye, Solis, Solplanet, GoodWe, Victron Energy and Sungrow hybrid inverters. Hybrid Energy checks the connection diagram for your specific inverter and connects the system.

Can the MVB8 be connected straight to the house distribution board?

No, only through a permanent connection with measures that stop the voltage from reaching the ESO grid, and only by qualified specialists. This is what ESO’s recommendations for a backup source say.

Is a 7.5 kW petrol generator suitable for a house, farm or construction site?

Yes, the MVB8 is meant for backup power for a house, solar systems with storage, construction sites, workshops, garden plots and outdoor events. The recommended long-term load is about 5.6–6.0 kW.

How loud is the MVB8?

The manufacturer states a noise level of up to 97 dB. It does not mention a sound-proof enclosure, so near living spaces the generator needs a well-thought-out location.

Can single-phase appliances be connected to the three-phase MVB8?

Yes, thanks to the “Equal Power” system the full 7.5 kW rated power can also be used from the 230 V socket. Keep in mind that pumps and compressors draw 2–5 times more current when they start.

Does Hybrid Energy install the generator?

Yes, Hybrid Energy delivers the MVB8 anywhere in Lithuania, installs it, connects it to the site or to a hybrid inverter and commissions it. The consultation before buying is free.
