How the MHD100 differs from the MHD80 and MHD250

All three models have liquid cooling, a built-in ATS, a Two-Wire Switch connection, Modbus monitoring, 1500 rpm and a 72 dB noise level. They differ in power, engine, tank size and weight:

Parameter MHD80 MHD100 MHD250
Rated / maximum power 80 / 88 kW 100 / 110 kW 250 / 280 kW
Rated voltage 230 V / 400 V 230 V / 400 V 400 V
Recommended continuous load (75 to 80%) 60 to 64 kW 75 to 80 kW 187.5 to 200 kW
Engine displacement 4800 cm³ 6900 cm³ 10,300 cm³
Fuel tank / running time stated by the manufacturer 120 l / 8 h 160 l / 8 h 1000 l / about 24 h
Weight / dimensions (L × W × H) 1150 kg / 2600 × 1100 × 1500 mm 1300 kg / 2600 × 1100 × 1500 mm 2700 kg / 3600 × 1300 × 2000 mm

Choose the MHD100 if the continuous load is above 60 to 64 kW (the MHD80 range) but within 75 to 80 kW. For a smaller load the MHD80 (80 kW, 120 l tank, 1150 kg) is lighter. The MHD250 (250 kW, 1000 l tank, 2700 kg, 3600 × 1300 × 2000 mm) is a larger class of equipment that needs more space; its rated voltage is given as 400 V only in the manufacturer’s datasheet, against 230 V / 400 V for the MHD80 and MHD100.

What is a 100 kW three-phase diesel generator used for?

The MHD100 is intended for backup power for homes and farms, building sites, solar systems with an energy storage battery, server rooms and other critical systems, and as the main source in an off-grid system. Of the three models, choose it when the continuous load is up to 75 to 80 kW: more than the 60 to 64 kW recommended for the MHD80, but far below the 187.5 to 200 kW of the MHD250.

How much fuel does the MHD100 use and how long does it run on a full tank?

The manufacturer states fuel consumption below 205 g/kWh. At the full 100 kW rated load that is 205 × 100 / 1000 = 20.5 kg of diesel per hour, or 20.5 / 0.84 ≈ 24.4 l per hour. At that rate the 160 l tank lasts about 6.6 hours (160 / 24.4). This is a rough calculation based on the manufacturer’s maximum consumption figure.

The manufacturer states 8 hours of continuous running. In practice the time depends on the load: the lower the load, the less fuel is used per hour. If you need to run longer without refuelling, an additional fuel tank is available as an option.

Diesel generator with ATS: automatic start from a hybrid inverter

The MHD100 has a built-in ATS and a factory Two-Wire Switch connection (a dry, voltage-free contact), so the generator can start and stop on its own without anyone stepping in.

  • On a site without solar, the ATS watches the grid: when the voltage drops it starts the generator and switches the supply over, and when the grid returns it switches back and stops the engine.
  • With a hybrid or off-grid inverter, the generator connects to the inverter’s generator input and the inverter decides when it needs help.
  • When the energy storage runs flat, the inverter sends a signal to the Two-Wire Switch connection, and the generator takes over the loads and charges the batteries.

Closing the contact starts the start-up routine, and opening it shuts the engine down safely. The manufacturer lists compatibility with Deye, Solis, Solplanet, GoodWe, Victron Energy and Sungrow hybrid inverters. Operating parameters can be monitored remotely over Modbus without going to the unit. Connection to the building installation and ATS configuration must be done by a certified electrician.

How do you connect a backup generator to a house or site?

The MHD100 connects to the site’s internal wiring through a fixed connection, and a certified electrician configures the ATS. ESO (Lithuanian grid operator) states, in its recommendations for installing a backup source:

“A generator may be connected to the internal electrical network of a whole building only by installing a fixed connection and measures that ensure the voltage produced by the generator is not fed into ESO’s networks… Entrust this work only to qualified specialists.”

ESO — Recommendations for installing a backup power source

In the same recommendations ESO advises choosing the power according to your existing connection, and, when connecting single-phase loads to a three-phase generator, allowing for the single-phase limit, because the datasheet gives the total power of all three phases.

We handle it for you. We select the equipment for your site, deliver anywhere in Lithuania, install and connect it.

Three-phase 230 V / 400 V output: how to spread the load

The MHD100 supplies both three-phase 400 V and single-phase 230 V loads, but it does not provide equal (full) power on each phase. Spread single-phase loads as evenly as possible across all three phases and avoid a large imbalance.

When planning the load, allow for starting currents: inductive loads such as pumps or compressors draw 2–5 times more current at the moment of start-up than when running.

Running at 100 % power for long periods is not recommended. The recommended operating range for the engine and alternator is 75–80 % of rated power, which for the MHD100 is about 75–80 kW (a 25 % power reserve). If the system includes energy storage, add the power the generator will use to charge the batteries to the building’s demand.

What to know before buying

  • Noise. The manufacturer states 72 dB. This is a diesel engine, so plan the location, ventilation and fuel storage in advance.
  • Weight and size. The MHD100 weighs 1300 kg and measures 2600 × 1100 × 1500 mm. Unloading and moving it needs certified lifting straps or lifting equipment of suitable capacity.
  • Fuel tank. The tank holds 160 l and the manufacturer states 8 hours of continuous running; an additional fuel tank can be chosen as an option, and there is a heated fuel block and an additional fuel pump.
  • Protection. No-load running protection, overpressure protection, an overcurrent circuit breaker, automatic shut-off when 10 % of fuel remains, AVR voltage stabilisation, and a frequency and voltage indicator.
  • Inverter. If you have a hybrid inverter, tell us the model and we will work out the connection.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Marsun MHD100 run on a full tank?

The manufacturer states 8 hours of continuous running with the 160 l tank. Our rough calculation for a full 100 kW load is about 6.6 hours, because consumption is then about 24.4 l per hour.

How much fuel does the MHD100 generator use?

The manufacturer states less than 205 g/kWh. At a 100 kW load that is about 20.5 kg, or 24.4 l of diesel per hour. At a lower load, hourly consumption is lower.

Does the Marsun MHD100 have an ATS?

Yes, the MHD100 has a built-in ATS. When the grid voltage drops it starts the generator and switches the supply over, and when the grid returns it hands the supply back and stops the engine. You do not need to buy a separate ATS unit.

Which inverters is the MHD100 compatible with?

The manufacturer lists Deye, Solis, Solplanet, GoodWe, Victron Energy and Sungrow hybrid inverters. Automatic start from the inverter uses the Two-Wire Switch connection, and Hybrid Energy matches the wiring scheme to your inverter model.

Can the MHD100 be connected straight to a house distribution board?

Not directly. The MHD100 may only be connected to a house or site network through a fixed connection with protection that stops voltage reaching the ESO grid, and only qualified specialists should do it.

Is a 100 kW generator like the MHD100 suitable for a house, farm or building site?

Yes. The manufacturer intends the MHD100 for backup power at homes and farms, building sites, server rooms and as the main source in off-grid systems. Hybrid Energy sizes the power to your grid connection and real load.

How does the Marsun MHD100 differ from the MHD80 and MHD250?

The MHD100 is the middle model: 100 kW (110 kW maximum), a 160 l tank and 1300 kg, against 80 kW and 120 l for the MHD80 and 250 kW and 1000 l for the MHD250. Hybrid Energy helps you choose the model for your load.

Can single-phase loads be connected to the MHD100?

Yes, the MHD100 also supplies single-phase 230 V loads, but it does not provide equal power on each phase, so spread them evenly across all three phases.

What load suits the MHD100?

About 75–80 kW, that is 75–80 % of rated power. Running at 100 % for long periods is not recommended. Pumps and compressors draw 2–5 times more current at start-up, which also needs to be allowed for.

How much does the MHD100 weigh and how is it delivered?

The MHD100 weighs 1300 kg and measures 2600 × 1100 × 1500 mm, so unloading needs lifting equipment. Hybrid Energy delivers anywhere in Lithuania, installs and commissions it.
