Diesel generator for a home: what is the MVD10 used for?

  • Backup or supplementary power for a house, farm or workshop
  • Off-grid and hybrid solar systems with batteries
  • Sites that need three-phase 230/400 V with equal power on each phase

How much diesel does a 9 kW generator use and how long does a full tank last?

At a full 9 kW load the MVD10 uses about 2.8 l of diesel per hour, so the 12.5 l tank lasts about 4.4 hours. The calculation is based on the manufacturer’s consumption figure: 265 g/kWh × 9 kW ÷ 1000 = 2.38 kg/h, and dividing by a diesel density of 0.84 kg/l gives 2.84 l/h; 12.5 l ÷ 2.84 l/h = 4.4 h.

At roughly half load, one tank lasts about 8.8 hours (an approximate estimate). The manufacturer also states up to 12 hours of continuous running, but does not say at what load, so plan around your actual load.

Generator with ATS: does the MVD10 have one?

No. The MVD10 has no built-in ATS (automatic transfer switch), but it has a connection for an external ATS module, which is bought separately. The ATS is what switches the load to the generator automatically when mains power fails.

Is the MVD10 compatible with hybrid inverters?

The Marsun MVD10 is listed as compatible with Deye, Solis, Solplanet, GoodWe, Victron Energy and Sungrow hybrid inverters. The exact connection has to be agreed against the project diagram.

How do you connect a backup generator to a house?

A generator may be connected to a building’s internal wiring only through a fixed connection, and the changeover can be automated with an external ATS module. ESO (Lithuanian grid operator) states, in its recommendations for installing a backup source:

“A generator may be connected to the internal electrical network of a whole building only by installing a fixed connection and measures that ensure the voltage produced by the generator is not fed into ESO’s networks… Entrust this work only to qualified specialists.”

ESO — Recommendations for installing a backup power source

ESO also advises choosing the power according to your existing connection capacity. When connecting single-phase loads to a three-phase generator, take the single-phase limit into account, because the datasheet gives the combined power of all three phases.

We handle it for you. We select the equipment for your site, deliver anywhere in Lithuania, install and connect it.

What to know before buying

  • Noise: 72 dB, with the generator in a soundproof canopy. It is worth thinking about the location in advance.
  • ATS: not built in; a connection for an external module is provided.
  • Fuel tank: 12.5 l; there is no automatic shut-off when 10% of fuel is left.
  • Monitoring: no online monitoring or Modbus.
  • Dimensions: 1010 × 580 × 820 mm (L × W × H).

Frequently asked questions

What is the Marsun MVD10 generator suitable for?

The Marsun MVD10 is a 9 kW (10 kW maximum) three-phase diesel generator for backup or supplementary power in homes, farms and workshops, and for off-grid and hybrid solar systems with batteries.

How many hours will the MVD10 run on a full tank?

At a full 9 kW load the 12.5 l tank lasts about 4.4 hours, and at roughly half load about 8.8 hours (an approximate estimate based on 265 g/kWh). The manufacturer states up to 12 hours of continuous running, but does not specify the load.

How much diesel per hour does the 9 kW MVD10 use?

At a full 9 kW load the Marsun MVD10 uses about 2.8 l of diesel per hour (265 g/kWh × 9 kW ÷ 1000 = 2.38 kg/h, divided by a density of 0.84 kg/l). At a lower load consumption is lower.

Does the MVD10 have an ATS?

No, the Marsun MVD10 has no built-in ATS, but it has a connection for an external ATS module. The module is bought separately, and Hybrid Energy can help you choose a changeover solution for your site.

Which hybrid inverters is the MVD10 compatible with?

The Marsun MVD10 is listed as compatible with Deye, Solis, Solplanet, GoodWe, Victron Energy and Sungrow hybrid inverters. The exact connection has to be agreed against the project diagram.

Can the generator be connected straight to the house’s distribution board?

No. The MVD10 may be connected to a building’s wiring only through a fixed connection with protection that stops voltage reaching the ESO grid, and only by qualified specialists. Hybrid Energy does this for you: we deliver anywhere in Lithuania, install and connect it.

How noisy is the MVD10?

The Marsun MVD10 has a noise level of 72 dB and is built into a soundproof canopy. It is still worth thinking about where to place it in advance.

Can single-phase appliances be connected to the three-phase MVD10?

The Marsun MVD10 works on a 230/400 V system with equal power on each phase. When connecting single-phase loads, ESO advises taking the single-phase limit into account, because the datasheet gives the combined power of all three phases.

Does the MVD10 have remote monitoring or automatic shut-off?

No. The Marsun MVD10 has no online monitoring / Modbus and no automatic shut-off when 10% of fuel is left. You need to keep an eye on the fuel level yourself; the tank holds 12.5 l.
