What is a 5.5 kW inverter generator used for: home backup, building sites, garden and camping
- Backup power for essential household appliances during a mains outage
- A top-up source for a solar PV system with battery storage in off-grid and hybrid systems
- Power tools on building sites and during renovation
- A garden house or plot
- Camping, a campervan and outdoor events
How much fuel does the MVB6PI use and how long does it run on a full tank?
The manufacturer states up to 6.7 h on the full 12 l tank, but does not say at what load. So it is worth knowing the full-load calculation as well.
An indicative calculation from the manufacturer’s data: 453 g/kWh × 5.5 kW = about 2.49 kg of petrol per hour, i.e. about 3.4 l/h (2.49 kg ÷ 0.74 kg/l). At full 5.5 kW load the 12 l tank would last about 3.6 h. The stated 6.7 h is likely at a lower load, so when planning long full-power work, count on about 3.6 h.
Can the MVB6PI be used with a hybrid inverter?
The manufacturer states compatibility with Deye, Solis, Solplanet, GoodWe, Victron Energy and Sungrow hybrid inverters. In a hybrid system, when the solar PV system produces too little and the battery runs down, the running generator powers the building and charges the batteries.
The MVB6PI starts electrically with the Start/Stop button. The manufacturer does not state a separate automatic-start connection or ATS for this model, so automatic starting on a signal from the inverter has to be checked separately before you buy.
How do you connect a backup generator to a house?
A generator must never be plugged into the house sockets. It is connected to the building’s internal network only through a fixed connection with a mains–0–generator changeover switch, and this must be done by a qualified electrician. ESO (Lithuanian grid operator) states:
“A generator may be connected to the internal electrical network of a whole building only by installing a fixed connection and measures that ensure the voltage produced by the generator is not fed into ESO’s networks… Entrust this work only to qualified specialists.”
The same ESO page advises choosing the power according to your supply connection and the real load.
We handle it for you. We select the equipment for your site, deliver anywhere in Lithuania, install and connect it.
What load can you connect to a single-phase 5.5 kW generator?
The MVB6PI supplies only single-phase 230 V, and its full power comes from that one phase. The total power of all connected appliances, including starting currents, must not exceed the 5.5 kW rated power.
Pumps, fridges and compressors draw 2–5 times more current when starting than when running, so allow a margin. Running at 100% load for long periods is not recommended: the optimum for the engine and generator is 75–80% of rated power, which for the MVB6PI is about 4.1–4.4 kW.
If the generator charges batteries, add the charging power to the building’s demand and multiply the result by 1.25. For the MVB6PI the combined building and battery-charging demand should therefore be up to about 4.4 kW. Temperatures above 25 °C and high altitude can reduce the maximum power.
Thanks to inverter technology the generator supplies a clean sine wave, so sensitive electronics such as laptops, desktop computers and precision instruments can be connected to it.
What to know before buying
- Noise level is 68 dB. The manufacturer does not state a sound-insulating canopy.
- Weight is 47 kg and dimensions are 610 × 407 × 555 mm. The wheels and handle let you move the generator to a garden, building site or campsite.
- Start is electric: switch on the battery power and hold the Start/Stop button for 3–5 seconds. The manufacturer does not state an integrated automatic transfer switch (ATS).
- Fuel is clean unleaded petrol, minimum 95 octane, with up to 10% ethanol allowed. Do not mix petrol with oil.
- The generator is delivered without oil: add 0.6 l of SAE 10W-30 before the first start. Change the oil after the first 5 running hours, then every 50–100 h or once a season; check the air filter and spark plug every 50 h.
- If it will not be used for a long time, disconnect the battery and check its charge every few weeks.
- Use outdoors only, with at least 1 m of free space on all sides and not in rain or snow: the exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Marsun MVB6PI run on a full tank?
The manufacturer states up to 6.7 h on the 12 l tank without naming the load. At full 5.5 kW load an indicative calculation gives about 3.6 h.
How much fuel does the MVB6PI generator use?
The manufacturer states 453 g/kWh. At full 5.5 kW load that is indicatively about 2.49 kg, or 3.4 l of petrol per hour.
Does the MVB6PI have ATS and automatic start?
The manufacturer does not state an integrated ATS or automatic-start connection for the MVB6PI. It starts electrically with the Start/Stop button.
Which hybrid inverters is the MVB6PI compatible with?
The manufacturer states Deye, Solis, Solplanet, GoodWe, Victron Energy and Sungrow hybrid inverters. Hybrid Energy matches the exact wiring scheme to your system.
Can a generator be plugged straight into the house fuse board?
No, only through a fixed connection with a changeover switch so that voltage cannot reach the ESO grid, and only by a qualified specialist. Hybrid Energy installs such a connection.
Is a 5.5 kW inverter generator enough for a house, garden or building site?
Yes, the 5.5 kW MVB6PI suits backup power for essential household appliances, a solar PV system with storage, a garden house and power tools on building sites.
How loud is the MVB6PI?
The manufacturer states 68 dB. The generator is used outdoors only, with at least 1 m of free space around it.
How much single-phase load can be connected to the MVB6PI?
Up to 5.5 kW from one 230 V phase, including starting currents. For long running the optimum is about 4.1–4.4 kW (75–80% of rated power).
Can I connect a computer and other sensitive electronics to the MVB6PI?
Yes. As an inverter generator, the MVB6PI supplies a clean sine wave at 230 V, suitable for laptops and precision instruments.
Does Hybrid Energy deliver and install the MVB6PI?
Yes, Hybrid Energy delivers the MVB6PI anywhere in Lithuania, selects the changeover solution, installs it and puts it into operation. A consultation before purchase is free.
