Winds are strongest from November to February, and weakest from July to August.

Practical takeaway: if you live near the coast or on an open plain, a wind turbine will genuinely supplement a solar system in winter, when the sun is scarcest and the wind is strongest. In a densely built-up or forested area, or a low valley, it’s worth lowering your expectations, or choosing a smaller, cheaper model as a supplementary rather than a primary source.

What permits a home wind turbine needs

Most household turbines don’t need any extra permits:

• Up to 10 kW and up to 10 m tall — a non-complex structure; no building permit required.
• Up to 30 kW and up to 15 m tall — also a non-complex structure, with simpler requirements than standard construction.
• Up to 30 kW — no environmental impact assessment, detailed plan, or land-use change required.

Setback distances to observe: for turbines up to 30 kW and up to 25 m tall, the distance to the plot boundary must exceed the unit’s largest dimension (length, width, or height). For turbines above 30 kW, the distance to residential and other buildings must be at least the mast height multiplied by 4.
